FAQs

How does the SMP Early Reader group work?

We are changing the name of the SMP Influencer to the SMP Early Readers. We will also be updating how the process works going forward.

Each month, SMP Early Readers will receive an email with access to early digital review copies of upcoming books. Digital review copies are distributed via NetGalley and you will be pre-approved for the digital ARCs.

Once per season (Winter, Spring/Summer and Fall), SMP Early Readers will have the opportunity to request physical copies of books they are interested in. Please note, physical copy quantities are limited. Those that are selected will be contacted.

I’m already an SMP Influencer. How does this affect my experience? Are current SMP Influencers automatically enrolled as SMP Early Readers?

Anyone who is a current, active SMP Influencer has been automatically enrolled as an SMP Early Reader through the end of 2024. Starting in 2025, SMP Early Readers will be required to reapply each year. If you are already enrolled, be sure to add smpearlyreaders@n.macmillan.com to your email contacts!

I no longer want to be an SMP Early Reader. How can I unsubscribe?

Please send an email to trademarketing@stmartins.com with the subject line “SMP Early Reader Removal” stating that you would like to be removed.

What are the requirements to apply?

If I’m currently enrolled, do I need to apply?

Starting in 2025, SMP Early Readers must submit an application every year during the application period to apply to continue to be an SMP Early Reader. You will receive an email when it is time to reapply.

How will I know if I’ve been selected to be an SMP Early Reader?

Due to the volume of applicants, only reviewers that have been accepted will be notified via email. Not all applicants will be accepted.

SMP retains the right to revoke your SMP Early Reader status at any time in its sole discretion.

I was not selected or I missed the application period. Can I still work with you?

If you are not selected or missed the application period, you can try applying again during the next application period.

In the meantime, if you were not selected as a SMP Early Reader you can check out our NetGalley catalog to request titles you’re interested in. Please be sure your member type is listed as “reviewer” and review SMP’s Approval Preferences for more information on what we look for in NetGalley requests. Submitting a request on NetGalley does not guarantee you a review copy.

How do you protect my personal information that I provide(d) to you when I apply to be an SMP Early Reader?

We take data privacy very seriously and you can view Macmillan’s data handling practices in our Privacy Notice here. If you want to be removed as an SMP Early Reader, please email trademarketing@stmartins.com with the subject line “SMP Early Reader Removal” and we will no longer use your personal information to contact you about our titles/campaigns for your review.

What if I need to update my information after I've signed up and/or requested titles?

Please send any updates in an email to trademarketing@stmartins.com with the subject line “SMP Early Reader – Information Update”.

Is the SMP Early Reader group open to international reviewers?

Due to contractual and territory restrictions, we cannot always accommodate international requests. However, international reviewers are welcome to email us at trademarketing@stmartins.com with “International ARC Request” in the subject line and we will forward your request to the appropriate team to evaluate.

When will I know if I’m selected to receive a physical copy?

Every campaign is unique, and physical copies are limited. Due to the volume of requests, not all requesters will receive physical copies. Only reviewers that have been selected to receive a physical copy will be contacted, the timing of which varies from campaign to campaign.

I was told physical copies were not available for a book for SMP Early Readers, but I have seen other accounts posting. How did they receive a copy?

In addition to the marketing team, other teams at SMP may send review copies. These are independent of SMP Early Reader group mailings.

How does SMP prioritize diversity and inclusion for their Early Readers selections?

Reviewers from marginalized and underrepresented groups are given equitable consideration during the application process, and all current Early Readers in good standing will have access to digital review copies of all available titles. Physical copies are limited, but we do our utmost to identify Early Readers from these groups to make sure they are equitably represented in our physical copy mailings based on the optional information provided by the reviewer when they apply and/or request titles. We are always seeking to improve our processes and welcome your feedback.

Are there any specific stipulations SMP Early Readers should follow when posting?

When reviewers receive any combination of free books, swag, etc. you need to disclose that you received these items from us by using “#sponsored” or “#ad” in a prominent place in your post copy, and abide by all applicable disclosure laws and regulations, including  current FTC guidance regarding social media disclosures.  Letting your audience know “I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review” (or the like) is helpful. Please also tag the imprint so we can follow along on your reading journey!

Will I be compensated for my review?

No, St. Martin’s Press does not provide compensation in exchange for reviews.
